Jingshan Du, who served as a research assistant in the Mirkin Research Group and the VPD Group, was selected as the recipient of the ASM Carl Samans Excellence Award. This is the highest student award given by the ASM Chicago Regional Chapter and carries a $1500 prize.

The purpose of this award is to recognize and encourage outstanding graduate and undergraduate students to continue their pursuit of a career in materials science and metallurgical engineering.

The award is named in honor of Dr. Carl Samans, who was a member of ASM for 47 years, past president and trustee of ASM International, Assistant Director of Research for American Oil (Amoco), and faculty member of Lehigh University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and Penn State University.

Du recently completed his Ph.D. at Northwestern and plans to join the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory as a postdoctoral research associate.
