IIN accepting 2020 summer REU applications through Feb. 10

The International Institute for Nanotechnology (IIN) at Northwestern University is again offering a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) summer program in nanotechnology. Online applications are due Feb. 10, 2020.

Participating students will engage in full-time research over nine weeks—from June 22 through August 21. In addition to vigorous lab work, students will attend regular group meetings, allowing them to share their progress and gain research experience from a wide-array of scientific projects; visit Argonne National Laboratory; and participate in special lectures, individual writing workshops and a public speaking seminar. At the end of the summer, students will complete a substantive research paper and present their accomplishments at a closing symposium.

Each REU student will receive a $5,750 stipend, round-trip airfare, and a meal plan and housing at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, at least 18 years old, majoring in the physical sciences or engineering, and with at least one year left to complete their degree. Participants are selected based on academic achievement

and scientific interests. Efforts are made to include students from smaller schools where research opportunities might not be available, and to encourage participation by women and other groups typically underrepresented in science and engineering.

To date, approximately 375 students have completed an IIN REU program. This program is funded by the National Science Foundation.
